The Satsuma Samurai’s Hijacking Plot

On June 27, 1863, just before the outbreak of the Anglo-Satsuma War, the British brought a fleet of seven warships into Kagoshima Bay. The Satsuma domain, however, was secretly hatching a bold plot to hijack them.

Their strategy was to load eight small boats with a suicide squad disguised as watermelon merchants. Once aboard, they were to draw their swords, ambush the crew, and commandeer the warships. This squad actually included the very samurai who had slashed Richardson during the Namamugi Incident, as well as Kiyotaka Kuroda, who would later become Japan's second Prime Minister.

Two of the small boats pulled up directly alongside the British flagship, HMS Euryalus, and displayed their watermelons. But contrary to the Satsuma samurai's expectations, the British sailors gestured that they didn't want any.

The disguised samurai stubbornly lingered until the British fleet's interpreter, Siebold, appeared on deck to ask what their business was. The squad claimed they had brought a letter, to which Siebold replied that only the single man carrying the dispatch would be allowed to board.

When the first Japanese man climbed up, Siebold asked if he had the letter, but the man said no. Then a second man climbed up. Siebold asked him the same question, and he too said no. As men continued to pour onto the ship one after another, Siebold grew angry and tried to stop any more from boarding.

Right at that moment, one of the squad members told Siebold that the person carrying the letter was a member of the Shimazu clan. He argued that it was a matter of basic etiquette for him to board with a large retinue of followers, demanding to know why only one person was being permitted.

Siebold went below deck and reemerged a short while later with several officers. Looking quite furious, he announced, "Gentlemen, you are all permitted to board." By that time, however, almost everyone had already made their way onto the ship anyway.

In the end, about 40 members of the suicide squad successfully infiltrated the Euryalus. However, because the other squads failed to board the remaining six ships, the men on the flagship were forced to retreat. They realized that even if they managed to hijack a single vessel, it would immediately be blown out of the water by the rest of the fleet. To avoid needless casualties, the hijacking plot was ultimately called off.

I felt the end of GW.

Today, a member of the dormitory went back here. She seemed to have good time. Most of the members will go back tomorrow and I'll have to live silently again. Although it is fun to talk with the members, it is complex situation for me who don't want to make them annoyed. How can I and them live comfortable?

How do you study even when you don't feel like it?

Just force myself to do it.
I won't say I like this method, but I am good at it. I come from a place where people don't understand the happiness of study...students work hard just to pass the exams. If we couldn't pass them, we would be punished. Meanwhile, if we could pass them, we would not get any reward because that is 'what we should do'.
Now I'm a person who can get good grades in exams but doesn't even have the motivation to do things I liked. What a sad story :(

English was not the world's lingua franca for centuries.
It began to grow in importance after the First World War, but only started to replace French as the international language after the Second World War.
English is widely used in aviation, business, education and tourism.

What platform do you use to share pictures?

What platform do you use to share pictures except Instagram?

It's flower season, and I really want to share with you guys the blooming flowers in my balcony garden. Videos always take me too much time, and I've been quite busy recently-- that's another story, and I'll tell you someday.

YouTube would reduce the image quality, and my Instagram account was banned a long time ago, so I really need some recommendations.

Here are the images of my little garden this morning: https://youtube.com/shorts/zH1Q-UdvQ-g

The plants are so lovely that I think it's a pity if I don't share them with others.

The martial art behind the Anglo-Satsuma War

Japan is home to numerous schools of swordsmanship. Among them is Jigenryu(示現流), a closely guarded secret of the Satsuma domain that was practiced primarily by its samurai. Out of all the Japanese sword styles, it is uniquely famous for staking absolutely everything on a single, devastating first strike. Delivered alongside an ear-splitting, bloodcurdling battle cry known as enkyo (monkey scream), the sheer power of this initial blow was terrifying. During the twilight of the samurai era, it even prompted Isami Kondo, commander of the famed Shinsengumi, to warn his men, "When crossing swords with a Satsuma man, always dodge the first strike." The force was so immense that there are historical records of opponents attempting to block the attack, only to be killed when the impact drove the unsharpened back of their own blade, or even their handguard, straight into their skulls. However, the very first thing a student of Jigen-ryu learns is that the sword should never be drawn. Ultimately, the core philosophy of Jigen-ryu was, "Be strong so that you never have to fight."
This mindset is reflected in the "Order of Men", a set of moral guidelines passed down by Satsuma samurai through the generations. It ranks five ways to live a life, in order of how commendable they are as individuals:
1. Those who take on a challenge and succeed.
2. Those who take on a challenge and fail.
3. Those who do not take on a challenge, but support those who do.
4. Those who do nothing.
5. Those who do nothing but criticize.
It’s amazing how relevant this still is today. Human nature really hasn't changed at all.

Koinobori

Comment tu dit "slingshot or flick" à traverse la pièce?

What is Manna?

The meaning of manna in Hebrew is: the food that God provided for you to eat.
It was white in color and tasted like pancakes mixed with honey.
God provided manna, and also gave rules:
It should be eaten on the same day; if left over to the next day, it will get infested with bugs and go bad.
The most amazing thing is that the Israelites collected manna in this way, some collected more and some collected less.
Those who collect more have no surplus, and those who collect less have no shortage.
It seems like the life of a Christian, where there is no surplus for those who earn more and enough for those who earn less.
So we don't need to envy others' wealth.
The Israelites believed in and obeyed God's Words.
Only in this way, can they safely reach the Promised Land.
