How to Read in your Target Language
It was in the morning and, just like usual I was taking notes in my notebook. I was having fun learning while listening to his voice (which sounded a bit high-pitched by the way). The teacher wrote some syllables and pronunced them. I wrote them and repeated after him.
In that moment I never thought I was learning wrong how to read in Japanese.
When I was in kindergarten, I learned the vowels and the consonants. Then, learned some words and finally how to read them out loud, but is that the best way to learn how to read?
Recently I've been learning how to read and I want to teach you how to use this information to reading faster in your target language.
Glenn Doman was a physical therapyst who worked with children with cerebral injuries. He wrote a book called "How to teach your baby to read" in which he explains his method. I collected some useful information from this book to create this journal.
But his book is about babies and we're definitely not babies so, why should we learn by following his method?
You see, if you start learning syllables or the alphabet, you'll read letters, not words. Thus, your speed reading as well as comprehension will be diminished.
Letters and syllabals are abstract. We don't fully understand them so, in order to remember them, we associate with words.
For instance, if we read the word "law" using an old technique, we would do this:
L stands for Lamp.
A stands for Ant.
W stands for Water.
What meant that word? I don't know, I just imagined a lamp who brightened an ant who was searching for water. That's why learning alphabet or syllables at first makes reading comprehension even harder.
So, what about learning complete words? What could happen?
Rather than giving you the answer, I encourage you to learn how to read in your target language.
Back to Glenn Doman's book, he mentions how to use his method:
At first, give yourself 10 second to watch each word.
Once you've identified them, watch them for less than one second. Start by reading common words including parts of the body and following these phases.
1. Words.
2. Word pairs.
3. Phrases.
4. Sentences.
5. Alphabet.
Who's learning how to read mustn't pronunce the words in order to stop subvocalization. In a nutshell, subvocalization means repeating in your mind what you read. This is a bad habit we learn as a kids and it slows your reading speed as well as comprehension.
And now you may ask, "how can I use this?"
These are a few examples:
Flashcards
In the best case, a native speaker teach you words by showing you flashcards for less than one second and pronunces them. However, if this isn't possible there are other options you can choose from to read faster in your target language.

Teaching is learning twice.
Teach someone else how to read in your target language by using Glenn Doman's method.
Personally, I like teaching my mom how to read Japanese kanjis.

Can I do say: This evening, my mother just has arrived from Algiers. ( The action is new.)
If I understand in first sentence I did not need to put a preposition " at".

He's saying "If that shit's contagious..." but I don't hear "If that" at all. Can native speakers hear it? How can it be represented by a diacritical mark?
It sounds like “that shit’s contagious we need to know”
"He means “if that shit is contagious we need to know” he is just skipping words."
Is it common to omit "If"?
I dont think its very common, but sometimes it happens when people talk fast. It may be common for different regions.
I see. No matter how many times I hear it, it just sounds like "a shit's..." to me. Do you hear "that" clearly?

Yeah, I would not say Happy New Year in this situation. Instead you could say,
• May this new year bring you comfort and peace.
• May our loved ones above protect us in the New Year.
• New Year’s blessings to you and your family.

Hmm... I've personally never heard it before, but grammatically it's correct.
It might be more natural if you added a "the" before "both."
"Let's make this a great year for the both of us!"
There's no real grammatical reason for adding "the," it just adds emphasis, I think. We often hear the pattern "the two of us," "the both of us," in native speech.

First one is wrong, second one is right.
If you say the first one, it sounds like he is holding a bottle of alcohol and sniffing the bottle.

A: Yeah, it's extremely popular in Japan, but it's rare to find someone from overseas who has read of it. Try reading it when you have the time!
You may not like the pictures at first, but after reading about 10 volumes, you just get hooked ... maybe.
But I wouldn't recommend the anime seriously. I think season 3 is still better, but 1 and 2 are pretty bad. The movements are kind of weird and its character design aren't cool. I think they ruined the original.
B: Haha really. What's it about, btw?
A: It's a story set in the Spring and Autumn period in China when China was divided into seven countries, about first Qin Emperor and the main character and the others unified China through war.
B: Sounds interesting!
A: Very interesting! It's a historical work, so to a certain extent, you can know what's going to happen, if you look it up. Without looking it up, you know that the First Emperor will unify China, and the author has already draw the main character becoming a general at the beginning of the manga. But even when you read the manga knowing what happened, it still sustains interest. There are many deeply moving and heartfelt moments. I don't know why it's only popular in Japan. I can understand if they think it's not for them after reading it, but I can't understand people who think they're not interested in it before reading it. Deciding on impressions is, y'know, like, discrimination.
B: I see, haha.
A: It's like assuming someone isn't interesting without even talking to them. I think you should try to read the manga at least once. I guess that's how the seeds of discrimination grow. You should see and hear everything yourself and form your own opinion after checking something out. This is important. Reading this manga is the first step toward eliminating discrimination. So you sould read it! haha
