History of United States

The War of Independence broke out on July 4th, 1776.
After the war, years went by. The new country wanted to grow, and it grew very fast.
In 1803, America bought a huge piece of land from France. It was called Louisiana.
It was five times bigger than France itself.
To explore this unknown land all the way to the Pacific Ocean, they sent a team.
Over the years, America kept growing.
They fought a war with Mexico and won Texas and the whole southwest.
Later, they bought the huge cold land of Alaska from Russia.
Finally, the beautiful islands of Hawaii joined as the 50th state.
If you look at the American flag today, you will see its history.
There are 13 stripes for the first 13 colonies and there are 50 stars for the 50 states today.
However, beneath the surface, there was a hidden problem.
America was getting big and rich, but it had a terrible sickness inside.
This sickness was slavery. To abolish slavery, the Civil War began in 1861.
The war destroyed the rich, comfortable life of the South.
If you have ever watched the famous classic movie Gone with the Wind, you can see how the war ruined
the beautiful life of a rich southern girl.
The Civil War was over, but the sadness was not.
Just five days after the war ended, President Lincoln was watching a play in a theater.
A man who hated him came from behind and shot him dead.
The Civil War ended, and America continued to move west.
Between 1862 and 1900, over 500,000 farmers moved west. They built small farms.
The white men coming from the east did not respect the buffalo.
They shot the animals by the millions, sometimes they killed the buffalo just for fun.
In a very short time, the number of buffalo dropped from 60 million down to less than one thousand.
Without the buffalo, the Native Americans could not live.
The government forced the Native Americans to leave their wide open lands.
They were put into small, poor areas called reservations.
Today, about one-third of Native Americans still live on these reservations.
It is a sad truth: a country built on the dream of freedom, took freedom away from its very first people.
