Why is French spoken in Québec?

Québec is in the northeastern part of North America.
Although Canada is an English-speaking country, French remains the native language of 78% of Quebecers.
So how did Quebec become a Francophone region?
It all began in the 16th century when King Francois Ist of France hoped to participate in the colonial competition in the Americas.
King appointed Jacques Cartier to explore new land.
In 1534, Jacques Cartier arrived in Canada.
France soon consolidated its presence in the Americas, establishing Québec as the center of its colony.
For the next few hundred years, the French residents were isolated from France, but still insisted on speaking French.
In the 20th century, Quebec struggled to preserve its French identity in the face of a growing tide of anglicization.
That's why Québec is still a French-speaking region.

In English, we would say "King Francois the First of France" rather then the Ist. Furthermore, if you wish to shorten the word "first", you would use "1st" not "Ist" in English. Also, I Googled King Francois to find out more about this topic, and it seems like we write his name as Francis in English, rather than Francois. I do not know why.
