In recent years, I didn't use Chinese much and I quit using Japanese for 2 years since graduation. Instead, I used English more often. Why do I speak and write in English? Mostly it's because it offered me a place to catch a breath from the trauma of East Asian culture. I sometimes imagine I'm an American girl, and thinking about what will an American do or say. As if only when I'm speaking English, I can be strong, confident, aggressive or honest. As if I can say I want something and will fight for it without feeling bad. As if I don't need to be sad about being a daughter and can be raised being cherished. I used to wish I have multiple personalities like Billy Milligan, but now I already gave up that idea. However, foreign languages gave me another chance to have different identities, to become someone different.

By “Chinese,” do you mean 普通话, Cantonese, or a different dialect that you spoke in childhood? Do you mean that you speak your first language less often? I think I translated this correctly but if I can make this clearer, I would love to help!
