The Long Goodbye/ The Penguins

I returned the book of which I wrote in the last entry to the library and came away with two new ones: The Long Goodbye (Raymond Chandler) and The Penguins (Tony D. Williams). While the copy of The Long Goodbye was well-thumbed, that of The Penguins was in mint condition. Apparently, there are not many people interested in the biology of penguins. The lifestyle of penguins, however, is as cool as that of Philip Marlowe.

According to the book, penguins are monogamous and mate with only a single partner during a breeding season. Also, some kinds of penguins have higher fidelity to their partner, and it is reported that a couple of Little Penguins continued to be breeding partners for eleven years.

Now that I've learned it, the penguin family on the cover of this book looks all the happier.

前回の投稿で書いた本を図書館に返し、新たに２冊の本を借りてきた。『ロング・グッドバイ（レイモンド・チャンドラー）』と『ペンギン大百科（トニー D. ウィリアムス）』。『ロング・グッドバイ』の方はだいぶ読み込まれていたけど、『ペンギン大百科』の方は新品同様だった。どうやら、ペンギンの生態に興味のある人はあまりいないらしい。ペンギンのライフスタイルはフィリップ・マーロウのそれと同じくらいクールなのに。

その本によれば、ペンギンは一夫一妻制であり、１つの繁殖期の間は、単一の相手としかつがいにならない。また、ペンギンの中にはパートナーに対してより高い貞節を持っている種がおり、コガタペンギンのあるカップルは11年間同じ相手とつがいであり続けたと報告されている。

それを知った後では、この本の表紙のペンギン一家は一層幸せそうに見えてくる。
