The Technical Secondary School I Attended

The technical secondary school I attended was in my hometown, the northern suburban area, about two or three kilometers from the city.

The houses in the school were all one-story buildings made of bricks and tiles.

Fifty-eight new students including me were enrolled in the school that year. We were divided into two classes and I was in Class One.

Our teachers graduated from different universities. The physics teacher graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China, and the philosophy teacher was from Nanjing University, and so on.

The subjects I learned in the school consisted of three parts: cultural courses that we would learn in high school, professional basic courses and professional courses.

We also did some practicums, such as metalwork practice in the factory attached to the school, driving practice in the school field, machine maintenance in a local factory and tractor-ploughing in some farms.

Our dormitory was a big house shared by us—23 male students. The beds we slept in were metal bunks. Every night we talked about a lot of nonsense in the dormitory before falling asleep.

A special type of plant in the school left a deep impression on me. They were short, planted as green belts, but the centers of their green leaves were white, which looked unique.

Now the school no longer exists. A few years ago, it was merged into a technical college. I guess many of the teachers may not be there anymore because they were quite old then. But some young teachers must still be around, since they were only a few years older than us.

After graduation, we were all assigned to the agricultural machinery departments in different counties, because our major was agricultural machinery-related.
