California roll is not traditional Japanese sushi. It was made in California. American people were not familiar with typical sushi shaped by hand, which has seafood ingredients on its top. Because at that time, American didn't have a custom of eating row fishes like people in some Asian countries. So, American were reluctant to eat sushi. That's was the reason that California roll showed up.
It was 1963, the name of sushi restaurant " Tokyo Kaikan", which was located in Little Tokyo in Los Angelus served California roll to American customers in order to be easier for American to eat sushi without hesitation. However, it wasn't successful at once. Even "nori" was unfamiliar for American people. The beginning, many people peeled "nori" off was caused of its eerie color and looks.
An original California roll's ingredients were mixture of king club and avocado dressed with mayonnaise. Unluckily, now king club is too expensive to be put inside of California roll. Now instead of real club, there is imitation club stick has used for it.
Personally, I haven't eaten a California roll before I came to U.S. After the first bite of it was not bad, I thought. Any low fishes were not inside of it, so it tasted a vegetable sushi for me. As far as I'm concerned, I prefer traditional sushi. However, sometimes a California roll attracted me especially a regular seafood ingredients sushi is too expensive at a store.
