Today I'm gonna talk about a recent controversial topic: do social media platforms genuinely connect people, or do they mostly increase loneliness and comparison?
Recently, different social media like Instagram or Snapchat are evrywhere. They're used for various reaons but the main one is connecting with other people and met others. However, the use of those social media has fell adrift and people are increasingly using this to watch videos inspired by the Tiktok form.
In the first place, I'm gonna talk about the positive side of using social media, then the downsides. To conclude, I will talk about my use of those tools.
Social media were created in the late 20th century. The first one was called "sixdegrees" and it was used to connect with other people. But as a matter of fact, the first one that really exploded was Facebook created in 2004 by the billionaire Mark Zuckerberg. It was a real breakthrough and people could create for the first time a profile that could be followed by the other users. It was clearly the best thing since sliced bread back then.
Throughout the time, many other social media have been created. Probably the most famous now is Tiktok. It has rock the world with the very short videos format that allowed people to swipe and skip videos they weren't interested in. This feature was the perfect answer to the new system the generation Z is in. It generates more dopamine and brings a lot of pleisure for a really short time.
Basically, the purpose of that social media completely fall adrift for the previous one social media were created. It was purely created for entertainment.
Nowadays, we can categorise social media into two categories. The first one is connecting and chagrine with friends and family. The other one is entertainment.
I would say the first one is positive in the large scheme of things, but the second one can be really harmful.
Indeed, being able to have discussions with friends is really useful to keep sharing moments with them, particularly when they are separated by a long distance. Moreover, it's an efficient tool when you wanna schedule plans or parties with your friends.
I think it must be much easier that it used to be before the creation of social media (I'm only sixteen I've always lived with that).
But the part that is way more problematic is the second. Indeed, creating social media for entertainment can look like a great idea but it's actually dangerous for your mental health. Indeed créations are using all the existential tips to get you hooked to their app so that you spend the most time on their app and they get the most money as possible. The problem is that you can feel depending to those social media, you can-/ do without them.
You're getting used to the dose of dopamine it's giving you and other activities like reading or even watching a movie can feel boring cause it's longer. You're getting used to swipe everything and you brain feels like he's always rewarded.
To conclude, I think the best way to fight against that addiction is to understand that you are addicted. It looks stupid but it's the first step to stop it. Then you need to find a way to reduce your screen time. The most efficient (I'm actually using it right now) is deleting the apps you're wasting time on. In my case, I deleted Instagram and Tiktok cause it was useless and it creates a feeling of competition that I found very harmful. Moreover, the positive side of Instagram, which is speaking with friends, wasn't efficient cause I spend the most time on Instagram scrolling rather than talking with friends (I do it on Instagram). The other way is to reduce progressively to find the perfect balance between entertainment and productivity.
