        After a year of chopping and changing, I went back to my old note taking system.

I haven't personally ever heard anyone use "chopping and changing" as an expression. It might be a regional thing; for reference, I'm originally from the Washington D.C. area in the US. I understand what it means, but it sounds unusual to me.
