To understand this story, we must travel back in time.
Before the Civil War, black slaves had a terrible life, but they fought back.
A famous book called Uncle Tom's Cabin showed the world how cruel slavery was.
This book was the best-selling novel of the 19th century.
It made many white people in the North want to help.
They created something called the Underground Railroad.
It was not a real train under the ground.
It was a secret network of safe houses.
Good people risked their lives to help slaves escape to the North, where they could be free.
After the Civil War, slavery ended, but true freedom did not come.
For nearly 100 years until 1954, there was a strict system of separation in the southern states.
White people and black people were separated.
Black people had to sit at the back of the bus.
They had to eat in different places and had to go to poorer schools.
A great man named Martin Luther King Jr. became the leader of the Civil Rights Movement.
He taught people to fight for their rights without using violence.
He dreamed one day people would be judged by their character, not by the colour of their skin.
He even won the Nobel Peace Prize, but the price of freedom is high.
A few years later, someone who hated him shot and killed him.
Today, many Black Americans have reached very high positions.
For example, Barack Obama made history by becoming the first Black President of the US.
