For many Japanese MLB fans — and perhaps especially for White Sox fans who are used to seeing the team struggle — Murakami’s performance feels truly remarkable. He has lifted the team out of its usual losing position, so the idea of him being a “messenger of God” doesn’t feel entirely like a joke. The meme “Murakami‑sama Kourin” captures that sense of hope and admiration very well.
