Is reading news important?
Well, if I were writing an essay for an exam or something, I would disagree. But I'm practicing using English, so here is my real opinion: Whether it is a waste of time depends on the situation.
Undoubtedly there are many advantages of reading news. You can learn about what is happening in your country, or even around the world. News, and the analysis of them, can help open our eyes and minds, just like what books do. But for someone who is struggling to live, to bring up their family, the most important thing may be not 'open their eyes'. They definitely want to spend time on things that connect with their lives.
Besides, to some extent, knowing too much could be horrible, because what a single person can do is limited, and sometimes it makes me feel bad. What do you think? Do you prefer a happy but ignorant life, or a life where you know a lot but feel powerless?

Yeah, when I see something unjust, or some atrocity committed, sometimes I get overly emotionally invested. Like you said, I don't see the reason for it if there's not much you can do to help the situation.

I think I'd always prefer knowing things, even if it'd make me feel miserable and powerless. The thought of willingly living in a false reality makes me uneasy.

Oh, what I meant was, once you become aware that there are heartbreaking things in the world, it's hard to regain the sense of peace you had before you knew about them. I guess I phrased it a bit awkwardly.

But yeah -- it's hard to go back once you've learned something terrible about the world. A sense of peace turns to heartbreak and hopelessness, which can then turn to nihilism and apathy. Come to think of it, maybe it is better to be ignorant about some things?
