When I was in middle school, the main purpose of the middle school graduation examination was to select students who were qualified to study at a technical secondary school.
At that time, graduates of technical secondary schools could be assigned jobs by the government, so students studied hard to pass the exam and leave the countryside. Many students even spent several years repeating the final year of middle school to pass the exam.
The middle school I attended usually had three 8th - grade graduating classes (for regular students) and one 8th - grade repeat class, with a total of about 200 students (elementary school lasted five years back then). Only five to eight students could pass the exam each year.
I still remember how I took the exam. In the year I sat for it, my province introduced a "pre - selection" policy. This meant that before the formal exam, there was a pre - selection test to choose students who were eligible to take the formal one. After the pre - selection exam, 23 students from my middle school were selected.
The formal middle school graduation examination was held in the county seat of my hometown, which is about 35 kilometers away from my school. The day before the formal exam, my teachers and **we** students took a public bus to the county seat.
The exam took place in a middle school in the county seat, but unfortunately, I can’t remember its name. We sat in a standard classroom, with one empty seat between us—both in the front - back and left - right directions.
There were three invigilators in the examination room: one stood at the front, one at the back, and the third walked around in the middle. No one dared to cheat, as they would be disqualified from the exam if they did.
The exam covered nine subjects: Chinese, Mathematics, English, Politics, History, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The full score for Chinese was 100, and the same for Mathematics. Politics, History, and Geography were tested together with a total score of 100; Physics, Chemistry, and Biology were also combined with a total score of 100; and English was worth 50 points. Thus, the total full score of the exam was 450.
After finishing the exam, I really had no idea if I could get a high score. Even though I was the top student in my middle school, I had never taken an exam of that kind before.
About a month later, the official exam results were released. It turned out that I got the highest score in my school and was the only student from the regular 8th - grade graduating classes who passed the exam.
