Marriage between now and past

In the countryside where I live, villages are typically a few kilometers apart, and people in the same village often share the same family name due to common ancestry, making marriage within the village taboo.

In the past, villagers relied on farming for a living, as they had few other options. Children in villages usually attended only elementary or, at most, middle school, and some never went to school at all.

Villagers’ relatives typically lived in nearby villages within five or six kilometers, as it was difficult to connect with people from more distant villages.

When young people reached around eighteen years old, their relatives would begin introducing them to potential partners, who were almost always from nearby villages.

There were few social activities for young people or between villages, so young people rarely had opportunities to meet members of the opposite sex.

Couples typically didn’t date multiple times before marrying. It was uncommon to see young couples spending time together in the countryside.

Blind dates seemed to have many drawbacks, but interestingly, divorces were rare among couples who met this way.

In contrast, today’s young people have many ways to meet potential partners. Ironically, the divorce rate among couples who meet through these modern means is quite high.

From these observations, I conclude that people tend to value what they have less when they have many options.

Marriage between now and past: Now vs. Then

There are a lot of options for wording this title, like “How Marriage has Changed”, “The Past and Present of Marriage” etc.
