Local Traditional Foods

Two of the traditional foods for Chinese New Year where I live are fried mung bean balls and Máyè.

About two or three days before the Chinese New Year, people start to cook the foods.

In order to make the fried mung bean balls, they soaked mung beans for about a day and a night. Then they grind the soaked mung beans into powder with a stone mill.

Since our village only had one stone mill, families had to take turns grinding soaked mung beans.

When grinding the mung beans, we needed to push the stone mill ourselves. I still remember the feeling of pushing the stone mill: I felt dizzy and nauseous.

The ground soaked mung beans were a paste - like substance. People put a certain amount of wheat flour in it and mixed them thoroughly, then made it into many small balls and fried them.

The Maye is relatively simple to cook. People use sweet potato flour, wheat flour and a lot of sesame seeds (people can also use corn flour, soybean flour…) to make a dough and flatten the dough to about one millimeter thick.

Then, people cut the dough into many rhombus-shaped pieces in similar sizes, and they were ready to be fried.

The fried mung bean balls are usually used to make soup while the Maye can be eaten as snacks. Of course, people can also eat the fried mung bean balls directly.

These two traditional Chinese foods are very delicious as the ingredients are fresh and contain no additives.

Well, that’s all for memory sharing, and I’ll see you guys soon with the next one.

Feedback

In both your dishes, you moved from a discussion on what people in China generally do to prepare these foods, to talking about specific occasions that you were involved in preparing the food, which made following a little difficult. When you change the topic like that, in English it's good to be clear that you are doing that, so a phrase like "Back when I was a kid, we would make mung bean balls" would help a lot with clarifying things.

Overall though, it's pretty good
