I prefer listening because it's the easiest way to get along with people. I have two rules for communication.
First of all, don't judge. Everyone wants to be listened to and understood.
The second rule is remembering what a person has said. It's crucial because it gives you topics for next conversation. Just ask: "How is ... going?" There will be no awkward silence. It's also nice of you.
However, there is a catch. Although most people like to talk about themselves, not everybody could be your real friend. If you were in trouble, the majority of your "friends" would disappear. So it's important to choose the right people. If you notice that your new acquaintance doesn't ask you any questions, doesn't try to remember what you said and he is the only one talking, I have bad news for you. You should find someone else because communicating with this person is a waste of time.

"your next" or "the next" both work here :)

"Communicating" in this context doesn't really work - communicating is used to describe being able to talk to someone. E.g., communicating through morse code, communicating through body language, having good communication etc. It isn't really used in common speech to describe having conversations with people (apart from in a comedic context ) :)
