Actually, my first goal was to read. Porn, mangas, fanfiction, books... I wanted to be able to read everything.
Please let me explain: I grew up in the countryside, as far from big cities as possible and amenities like libraries where few and far away. My mother, who reads even more than I do, amassed lots of books, either bought, given or stolen. She therefore had a private library which seemed gigantic to me. Of course I had free range of it and read lot of things that I'm sure were not appropriate for my age. But I loved it (even when I didn't understand anything.) Years passed and my hunger only grew. I read almost all books at home, raided the pitiful excuse for a library in Middle School (my High School DIDN'T HAD a library, period.), borrowed novels from friends and finally got my first library card. From a very small and neglected library, whose employees barely knew how to read and didn't care much anyway.
I only discovered texts online when I was twenty and at University. I also just met my firs REAL public library (and fell in love at firs sight.) I got my first PC and fell into scantrad or scanlation (translation of scanned mangas) then into fanfiction and... I'm still here. I sometimes buy novels in English either because they are slow to come to France, either because they will not come at all (sometimes one volume make it and then... nothing. Grrr.)
It's true that there is billon of anything you may want online, but when it come to read, most of it is in English (well maybe in chinese too but my keyboard refuse to get me there.) For an avid reader, English is the way to go. So yes, I have attained my goal. It won't finish, though. I'll never stop reading.
