Karate and Me: An Unexpected Match 空手と私(おそらく意外な組み合わせ)

Most people are surprised when they find out I practice karate. Apparently, I don’t look muscular, nor do I seem like the type of person who would take up martial arts. I only go to the dojo once a week, and I don’t compete in tournaments, but I still practice a little every day at home, and I think about karate every single day.

Karate is actually much safer than people think. In the seven years since I started, I’ve never been seriously injured. The worst that happened was accidentally falling and hitting my ribs, or getting a bruise on my thigh or toe. That’s about it. Since we wear protectors, even when an opponent’s fist makes contact, it doesn’t hurt.

Far from being dangerous, karate makes you healthier and helps relieve stress. It’s all benefits, except for one problem: I don’t have any karate mates. Because I train at a dojo that’s mainly for children, there are no people my age to practice with. If I had some, I could train more effectively and share thoughts about karate. Sadly, that’s something I can’t change on my own.

You can also word this sentence completely in the past tense, like:

"The worst that happened was that I once accidentally fell and hit my ribs, or that I'd gotten bruised on my thigh or toe."

That’s about it.

Since we wear protectors (or protective gear), even when an opponent’s fist makes contact, it doesn’t hurt.

Far from being dangerous, karate makes you healthier and helps relieve stress.

It’s all benefits, except for one problem: I don’t have any karate mates (or buddies).

It would be more natural to use "buddies" here.

Because I train at a dojo that’s mainly for children, there are no people my age to practice with.

If I had some, I could train more effectively and share my thoughts about karate.

or: "...and we could exchange thoughts..."

Sadly, that’s something I can’t change on my own.

Well done!

It’s allThere are a lot of benefits, except for one problem: I don’t have any karate mates. (or partners or training partners)

What you have is good. This might be slightly more natural for US English.
Could also say "There are a lot of benefits, except for one problem; I don't have any friends that do karate. "

Because I train at a dojo that’s mainly for children, there are no people my age to practice with.

ᕦʕ •ᴥ•ʔᕤ Are you beating up all the kids ? LOL 冗談です

If I had someparring partners, I could train more effectively and share thoughts about karate.

Sadly, that’s something I can’t change on my own.

Thank you! Believe it or not, some kids are good enough to beat me! lol

The worst that has happened was accidentally falling and hitting my ribs, or getting a bruise on my thigh or toe.

It’s all benefitscial, except for one problem: I don’t have any karate mates.

BecauseThe reason for this is that I train at a dojo that’s mainly for children, there are no people my age to practice with.

It is awkward to start a sentence with because.

If I had some sparring partners, I could train more effectively and share thoughts about karate.

You write better than most of the students that I taught at the undergraduate level.
