The River Jordan
Today the river Jordan marks the boundary between the states of Israel-Palestine and the modern-day Kingdom of Jordan.
It flows south through Israel and eventually into the Dead Sea.
This river has a very special status in the Bible.
Naaman washed himself seven times in the River Jordan and was healed of his leprosy.
Joshua crossed it to conquer Canaan and Jesus was baptised in it to conquer sin.
In the Old Testament, the people who lived beyond the river Jordan were known as the Moabites.
Sadly the people who wrote the Bible didn't have very nice things to say about them.
According to the book of Genesis, the ancestor of the Moabites was the result of an incestuous love affair between Lot and his eldest daughter.
It's interesting that the Moabites wrote similar nasty stuff about the Israelites too.

For natural landmarks, I think that generally the name comes before the type of thing, ie. Jordan (name) River (thing), the Gobi (name) Desert (thing), the Dead (name) Sea (thing), the Amazon (name) Rainforet (thing), Igazu (name) Falls (thing), etc. Mountains are an exception - Mt Olympus, Mt Everest, etc.
