I agree with your first point, but I disagree that animals have more empathy than humans. Just take a look into nature, real nature; heinous things happen every day. A stag repeatedly shoves a little male fawn into a lake where a crocodile is waiting. Wild dogs rip apart a pregnant gazelle and eat her and the baby alive. Mama bird takes too long to get back to the nest, so hungry baby bird swallows its sibling, the runt of the litter. Ruminants will even eat baby birds when they get the chance. And that's just the stuff I've seen on Youtube... it's a helpful reminder of what "humanity" actually is.
