Glasses, One of the Greatest Inventions 眼鏡、この素晴らしい発明

I started wearing glasses when I was in college. Now they feel like a part of my face. Without them, my face looks incomplete, almost as if something is missing.

Some people switch to contact lenses because they find glasses inconvenient. For me, though, contact lenses are the real hassle. Sometimes they don’t go in properly, and they make my eyes dry. I need to use eye drops from time to time, and when a speck of dust gets in, it is extremely painful. Glasses, on the other hand, are almost effortless. You put them on in the morning and take them off at night. That is all.

Glasses are such a valuable tool that I cannot imagine living without them. When I think about it, it is a blessing that the human face has just the right structure, with the nose and ears in exactly the right places to support glasses. If our noses or ears were on top of our heads or foreheads, there would be no way to wear them. I feel truly grateful for this invention and the structure of our faces.

大学生のころから眼鏡をかけている。今では自分の一部のような感じで、眼鏡をかけてない自分の顔を見ると要素が足りないようで違和感があるほどだ。
不便を感じてコンタクトレンズにする人もいるが、私はコンタクトレンズが逆に煩わしく感じる。コンタクトレンズはうまく入らないときもあるし、目も乾いてしまう。ときどき目薬をささなければならないし、ごみが入ったときはとても痛い。それに対して眼鏡は朝起きたらかけて、寝るときにはずすだけだから手間がほとんどない。
眼鏡は大変価値のある道具だ。眼鏡がなかったらどんな不便な生活になるだろう。人間の顔、具体的には鼻と耳がいい位置についていて、眼鏡をうまく支える構造になっていてよかった。鼻や耳が頭とかおでこについていたら、眼鏡を支える構造はない。この発明、そして人間の顔のつくりに感謝している。

Well done! Do glasses ever get in the way of practicing karate?

Thank you! Actually, they do. Plus, my coach doesn’t allow us to practice kumite sparring with glasses on, for safety reasons, so I wear contact lenses for the two hours of karate practice, though unwillingly. lol

Interesting! I didn't know that contacts are OK for kumite. I think I would be too scared to wear contacts while sparring! lol

Thank you. As an English learner, I often have a hard time choosing the right level of speech. I tend to err on the side of being too polite or too formal rather than too casual. Besides that, I’m the kind of person who writes a bit seriously even about very light topics.
