Gastric fiber

Today I had an annual health check required for all employees in my company. Although I am not very familiar with how health check ups are organised in other countries, I am sure Japan is one of the most enthusiastic countries about that.
If you’re employed as a full time worker, you should have annual check ups which includes basic medical exams such as chest X-rays, blood and urine tests, stool tests for colon cancer screening, eye fundus/vision tests, ECGs and so on. Of course mammography and cervical cancer screening will be added for women. On the top of that, most companies recommend gastric screening by fluoroscopy or fiber (camera) for employees over 40 years old. Those full-course set of tests takes a good half day.
When I was working as a physician, I had never thought gastric fiber as “invasive”. It doesn’t need general anaesthesia or hospitalisation, and it takes only 15 minutes.
But when it comes to my own experience, I had to change my mind. It IS invasive.
We should reconsider the balance between risk or drawbacks and benefit for these check ups, but I heard that if those checkups were banned thoroughly, many technicians for clinical laboratories and radiology would lose their jobs, that’s why we are unable to stop these habitual activities for which there is little evidence.
