Fig

This year, the fig tree in my garden bore an abundance of fruit. The other day, I saw two figs turning almost red and thought I would wait one more day before picking them, but the next morning I found that both had been eaten by birds. I had put a net over the tree, but it wasn’t enough. The shock was beyond words.

Corrections

The other day, I saw two figs turning almost red and thought I would wait one more day before picking them, but. However, the next morning I found that both had been eaten by birds.

What you had is grammatically correct as well. This might just be my preference.

I hope you find a solution for those birds.
