When I was a kid, sweet potatoes were grown in my village and served as our staple food.
In the area where I lived, sweet potatoes were harvested in late October or early November.
During the harvest, people would first cut off the sweet potato vines and then use cattle to plow the sweet potatoes out of the soil.
However, some sweet potatoes were always left in the fields. So, the children in the village, including me, would go to the fields to dig for them.
We carried a shovel and a basket to dig for the sweet potatoes. After digging up some, we liked to roast them right there in the fields.
First, we dug a small ditch and collected dry straw. Then, we placed the sweet potatoes along the edge of the ditch, put the straw inside the ditch beneath them, and lit the straw to roast them.
After roasting the sweet potatoes for about twenty minutes, we placed them in the ditch and covered them with the soil we had dug out earlier.
About ten minutes later, the roasted sweet potatoes were ready to eat. They were delicious when cooked this way.
Digging for sweet potatoes was an exciting activity that children loved to do in the past.
