Child Rearing
Yesterday I talked to a Chinese woman whom I haven't talked for more than a year or so, she must have studied to be a public accountant during that period. While she was studying, to my surprise, she was pregnant, and delivered a baby girl last month. She is the one who wants to chat with me again, and yesterday, we started chatting in Japanese and in Chinese.
As a traditional Chinese custom, she's now living together with her mother in law, who'll sometimes take care of the baby girl, her mother in law is supposed to live together for about a year, but actually, what mother in law said about taking care of a baby and what she check on the internet seem to be somewhat different. She's tried to avoid quarrel with her mother in law. I guess these kind things sometimes happen between a wife and her mother in law. Is it s a so called generation gap?
Does there any problems happen sometimes between a wife and her mother in law in western countries? As a Japanese custom, a pregnant wife may come back her parents' home to deliver a baby. I'm not sure, but even now the custom might remain in the countryside of Japan. Nowadays Japanese younger generation doesn't want to live together with the husband's parents anymore, and their parents didn't want to live with their parents, either. So they don't want to live with their son's family, either.
Therefore, their son's wife may have a lot of problems to take care of the baby. Child rearing is very difficult for a woman who's never delivered before. There's a few cases that mother feels so lonely and stressed that she killed her baby in Japan. In a sense, I think that Chinese traditional custom and Japanese traditional custom seem not to be so bad in general as a result.
