Are news a waste of time?

I totally disagree with this premise.
I can understand why people feel disconnected from the news, although I don't think it is caused by the content but by the form.
Nowadays, the news have become extremely sensationalist and biased. I don't believe in absolute neutrality, but most newspapers and news programmes don't openly recognise their biases, so they present the news as if it was objective reality. A good example of this would be the use of certain kinds of lenses to make people look closer in the street than they really are. A few months ago, the news programmes in my country were using it to exacerbate the idea that people weren't following enough covid protocols, even if it wasn't true and people respected social distance.
Taking this into account, I believe is important to stay connected with what happens around us, but we must read and watch different kind of newspapers and news programmes. It is difficult to find newspapers that we consider honest and reliable, but there are some independent media groups that try to provide verified and trustworthy information. All media will have biases, therefore we need to check as many sources as we can in order to get a complete idea about what is happening around the world.
