What did I do on the first day of the Chinese New Year?

I didn't go back to my hometown for the Chinese New Year, so the first thing I had to do was call my parents to say 'Happy New Year,' which is to say, '拜年' (Bainian) .

I had already transferred some money to them the day before as a sign of filial piety. The timing couldn't be messed up, because the first day of the Chinese New Year is the time for the older generations to give money in red envelopes to the younger generation. If I transferred money that day, my parents might say that I am no longer their daughter.

Then, after some chores, I took a ship to cross the Huangpu River to the City God Temple. But there were too many people in the line to enter the temple. Even a group of soldiers was assisting the police with crowd control.

My friend and I decided to abandon our original plan. We went to an exhibition instead, which you can see here:https://youtube.com/shorts/Pny-DgwUyIQ?si=YilR-Tjk7jF86bLb

What I did I do on the fFirst day of the Chinese New Year?

Sentence can be tidied up a little!

I didn't go back to my hometown for the Chinese New Year, so the first thing I had to do was call my parents to say 'Happy New Year,' which is to say, '拜年' (Bainian) .

I had alreadyYesterday I transferred some money to them the day before as a sign of filial piety.

Mostly moving the time indication of the event to make the mention of "timing" in the next sentence a little more clear.

The timing couldn't be messed up,had to be exact because the first day of the Chinese New Year is the time for the older generations to give money in red envelopes to the younger generation.

If I transferred money that day, my parents might say that I am no longer their daughter.

Then, after some chores, I took a shipboat to cross the Huangpu River to the City God Temple.

Changed "ship" to "boat". Even though it is technically correct, "ship" is typically used for more traveling larger distances or for a very large boat.

But there were too many people in the line to enter the temple.

Even a group of soldiers was assisting the police with crowd control.

My friend and I decided to abandon our original plan.

What did I do on the first day of the Chinese New Year?

I didn't go back to my hometown for the Chinese New Year, so the first thing I had to do was call my parents to say 'Happy New Year,.' which is to say,Doing this is called '拜年' (Bbainian) .

“Which is to say” sounds like you said the words “拜年” to them.

A ship is usually very large. I would suggest “boat” or “ferry: “I took a ferry across the Huangpu….”

But there were too many people in the line to enter the temple.

Even a group of soldiers was assisting the police with crowd control.

My friend and I decided to abandon our original plan.

I agree with the feedback from curious_owl, although I would say that adding "So" is optional.
At the beginning of the video, "went" is pronounced accurately. You closed down the sound at the end. Nice!
I only heard an extra sound on two words: "If-ah" and "you'd-ah."
"Calligraphy learner" is logical and understandable, but a native speaker would almost certainly use a different term. Some options are:
calligraphy student, apprentice, novice, aspiring calligrapher
The lanterns were really interesting, and the narrow street was such a contrast to the official images of Shanghai. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks again!

Your "went 1 went 2 went 3" method works!

The narrow street is the old street in Shanghai, with over a hundred years of history. It's empty now, just used for tourism.

A few years ago, one of my coworkers lived there with his family. He told me it was terrible living there because it was not just narrow, but also old-fashioned, even without a toilet in their home.

I once read a book written by a young man who went to China to teach English in a middle school in Beijing before the big ring roads were built. (He was there when the first Walmart opened.) He described the old streets, courtyards, and apartments in the neighborhood where he lived and also the public toilets. He wrote about the vendors who traveled through the neighborhoods on a schedule, collecting materials to resell. The lifestyle was so different from the way people live in modern skyscraper apartments.

Life in China has indeed changed significantly over the past few decades. The last part you wrote still exists now, kind of a lifestyle for some old uncles and aunts -- they have retired, but still want to do something, not for money but for doing something.
