Sept. 16, 2025
In the second year of my technical secondary school, my classmates and I participated in a tractor-ploughing practicum at a state-owned farm about 120 kilometers from our school.
We traveled to the farm by a large bus on October 1st. The farm was vast; standing in its center, we couldn’t see any villages nearby.
Within the farm, there was a residential area for farm employees, resembling a small village with various buildings.
We stayed in a large single-story dormitory with bunk beds.
Our task was to learn how to drive tractors and plough the farmland under the guidance of a qualified driver. The practicum lasted one month.
The training was divided into two shifts: day and night. We operated Dongfanghong 75 chain tractors, which were among the most powerful tractors at the time.
During the night shift, ploughing the farmland felt unique. The tractor’s lights seemed brighter in the darkness, and the fields were so vast that it took a long time to travel from one end to the other. This meant fewer operations were required.
The tractor’s clutch was very stiff and required significant strength to operate. One female student, weighing only about 45 kilograms, couldn’t press the clutch even when standing on it, so she was unable to participate in the practicum.
We had a break at midnight, during which we were treated to a bowl of mutton soup, which was the most delicious mutton soup I’ve ever tasted.
In the early morning, the morning glories on the fences of the farm workers’ houses bloomed beautifully, adorned with dew on their petals. This was, in my opinion, the most beautiful scenery on the farm.
At the end of October, we completed the practicum and returned to our school. I haven’t visited the farm since, but I’m very curious to know what it’s like now.
