A night without my son
Japanese elementary schools usually have an event called “staying-over learning” for 5th graders.
It is an overnight trip led by school. The destination is some public facilities in countryside, and there kids enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and camp fire.
My 10-year old son is out for that, so I and my husband are staying home as usual but…
it is unusually quiet a night.

There's similar activities here, but it's usually not organised by the school. Instead there's groups such as boy scouts and girl scouts/girl guides that kids can join which will arrange activities like that.
