Components of a set of fishing gear when I was a child

Fishing rods
Hemp stalks, bamboos and sorghum stalks. These materials are easy to find in the countryside.

Fishing lines
Every family has sewing threads which are used to mend clothes.

Fishing hooks
Sewing needles that are used to mend clothes are popular in every family. When we make a hook, we heat a needle with an oil lamp first, then bend it into a hook with a hand plier.

Fishing baits
Flour dough, flies, earthworms, niblets and so on. These “baits” are very easy to find in rural areas.

Fishing floats
Sorghum peduncles, garlic stalks, chicken feathers. All of these are common in the countryside.

Generally, "bamboo" is uncountable. Typically, we might use "bamboos" when talking about different types/species of bamboo, e.g. "Bamboos are some of the fastest-growing plants in the world."
