初めての長い本を読み終わった！
私は今日、やっと初めてのマンガじゃない本を読み終わった！読んだ本は「星の王子さま」だった。すごく有名な文学作品だし、みんなさんはもうどういう本なのか知っているだろう。アントワーヌ・ド・サン＝テグジュペリによって書かれた中編小説なんだ。本来フランス語で書かれたけど、それ以後日本語を含めてたくさんの言語に訳されているんだ。
英語にも訳されている。実は、その本を子供のころに読んだことがあるが、それからもう数年が経っているんだけど、もう一度読むといいかもしれないと思った。

I finally finished my first non-manga book today! The book I read was "The Little Prince". It's a really well-known piece of literature, so you probably already know about it. It's a novella written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It was originally written in French, but has since then been translated into many languages including Japanese.
It has also been translated into English. Actually, I'd read the book when I was a child, but it's been many years since then, so I thought it'd be nice to read it one more time.
Reading books is so tiring! There were many new words and expressions, so I had to constantly turn to the dictionary. I recorded all of those words down. In the end, there were more than 900 of them! For this reason, even a single chapter can take many hours to get through. Then I turned to the back cover... the difficulty level was only "intermediate primary school level". I must continue to work hard...
Anyway, as a reward, I could go to the bookstore to buy the next book! The book I'm reading next is "Your Name". I've seen the movie and know the plot, so it should be easier to read. Nonetheless, its difficulty level is higher than that of "The Little Prince". I will return in a few months...

子供向けの本は意外と難しいですよ。擬態語が多かったり、普段大人が使うのと違う表現が出てきたり。でもいい勉強になりますね。

添削してくれてありがとうございます！特に擬態語について、本当に言う通りですね！私は中国語が分かるんですけど、時々漢字の意味を推測できます。しかし、同じことが擬態語について言えませんから、覚えるのはもっと難しいです。それでも、その単語はよく出てきますので、覚えるといいと思います。

I'm responding to looking up and writing 900 words. That is beyond tiring! My suggestion is not to do this with your new book. 1. You did not use this method to learn to read English, and native speakers everywhere learn to read their first language without doing this. So, the evidence is against it being an effective method. 2. You could try the five finger check. Variations of this are used to help students in elementary school pick a book that they can read independently. Open your new book to a random page. Start reading. When you see a word you don't know, put up a finger. If there are five words on the page that you don't know, the book is at a higher level than you can read and understand independently. So, be patient, and choose another book. If you have committed to reading this new book, then you could compare how many words you don't know on a random page with a random page of The Little Prince, to get a sense of how difficult it will be to read. Try to choose a book that has three or so words you don't know on a random page. 3. The next thing to consider is whether you need to look up all the words you don't know. (Do you look them all up when you are reading Manga?) Here it might be helpful to reflect on the 900 words and expressions you looked up. I used the exact same method with a unit in an online course I took, and I ended up spending 90 days on that unit. I cannot say that I ever look back on my notebook of words or that I have any idea how many or even which ones I learned, if any. So, I have admitted to myself that for me, it was a waste of time, effort, and focus to use that method. Now I am using two different methods. Because I'm studying online, I can click on any word or sentence for a Google Translation. After I see what the word or phrase means, I decide if it is worth saving it so I can learn it. To save nouns, I add them to an app that lets me review my words in a quick game that tests my memory and includes a translation and all the cases of that word. Anything else I decide to save, I make an Anki card of it. As you know, Anki decks are designed to help learners memorize, so I'm choosing what I want to commit to memory. But, at any time, if I'm reviewing a card, and I decide I don't really need or want to learn it, I delete that card. So, long story short: I suggest that you try reading in your target language the same way you read in your native language. By picking a book you can read without having to look up so many words, you will read much faster and enjoy reading much more. Look up words if you need to understand the text, and decide on the spot if they are worth memorizing or not. I'm finding it immensely freeing to look something up to understand it and then let it go. Kind of like "catch and release." Every day I am really pleased at how quickly I am progressing in the new unit. Because I work faster, I feel more confident, and it makes me want to keep going. I hope you also have a positive outcome if you decide to try something different.

Thank you for your suggestions! I must clarify that I don't memorise every foreign word I come across. (That would be absurd!) I use a "three strike" system: only when I've come across a word for the third time without knowing what it means will I go through the effort of making an Anki card to commit it to memory. Of the 900 words I've recorded down, I've made cards for no more than 10.
Second, since I speak Chinese, I could actually correctly guess the meaning of a fair number of kanji. Many of my lookups are for the pitch accent of the word rather than the definition. I'm quite concerned with correct intonation, so I often feel the need to confirm my reading...
On the point of the five finger check, that seems to be a good gauge which I will try! I calculated the average number of foreign words per page of The Little Prince and it came out to around five. This number is complicated by the fact that a few pages contain only pictures, and that some words I recorded down I could actually guess the definitions of — I noted them down solely by virtue of me not having come across them before. Unfortunately, the books I buy are wrapped in a plastic film, so I can't flip them open beforehand... but if this new book proves too challenging, I will consider buying a new one. It'd be an excuse to go to the bookstore, which I enjoy browsing!

Got it! What if you read an E-book? Are there online websites dedicated to Japanese pronunciation and intonation that would give you what you want with a simple copy and paste from the online text? Buying books wrapped in plastic film sounds so alien to me. Every bookstore I have been in here in the US and in Europe has books out for browsing before you buy! 🤫The only exception are comic bookstores which sometimes have those to protect the fragile or very expensive editions...

Hm, I've not ever really tried e-books. Perhaps I should look into them sometime; the ability to see both the definition and pitch accent of a word by hovering over it (I have a browser extension that does this) will likely expedite the reading process.
Also, wrapping books in plastic film is strange, isn't it? I think it's only the specific section of the bookstore I go to, where the books for children (I say "for children", but they are by no means easy nor thin) are located, that does this. Most other books being sold I can pick up and flip the pages freely.

添削してくれて、ありがとうございます！「～するのもいい」という文法構造を見たことがないんですけど、覚えます。本を読むのは新しい単語と自然な表現を学ぶためによいと思いますから、もしかしたらzionさんも英語の本を読んでみたほうがいいかもしれません！でも、特に最初は絶対に難しいですよね…読み続けるにつれて、だんだんやすくなるといいんですけど。

自分でも調べてみたのですが、このような文構造もあるにはあるようです。ただ、”読むのもいい”を分解して解説すると...
”読むの”＝読むという行為をすること、”も”＝動作の並列（暗に読むことと、ほかの動作とが同等であることを表している）、”いい”＝良い、となるようです。この表現は、おそらくあなたの意図する内容と一致していない表現だと思います。自分が使っていた表現は正確な日本語ではなかったようです...。すみません💦
