Where did the name "America" come from?
It came from an Italian businessman who traveled to South America.
In 1492,a famous explorer named Christopher Columbus sailed across the ocean.
He was looking for a new way to India.
When he finally saw land in the Caribbean Sea, he was very happy.
He thought he was in India.
So,he called the local people Indians.
It was a big mistake, but the name stayed.
In 1607, a group of English people arrived and built the first town: Jamestown.
Why did they cross the dangerous ocean?
They were looking for one thing: gold.
But the land did not give them gold. Instead, it gave them sickness and death.
The English people in Jamestown survived, because they learned to grow a special plant tobacco.
But here's the dark part of the story: to grow more tobacco, they needed more workers.
So they started bringing black people from Africa to work as slaves.
A few years later, in 1620 another group of English people arrived.
They came on a ship called the Mayflower. They were very different from the people in Jamestown.
They cared about their beliefs instead of gold. They wanted to pray to God in their own way.
They wanted freedom and equality.
They believed that all people in their group were equal and they did not use slaves.
More and more people came from Europe. By 1770, there were 13 colonies on the east coast.
They belonged to Britain, but the people living in America were not happy.
The British king made them pay very high taxes, but the Americans had no voice in the British government.
The Americans were very angry.
In 1773, to protest a high tax on tea, they did something crazy.
They threw a lot of British tea into the ocean in the city of Boston.

"people" isn't wrong, but I believe they were specifically called "settlers" because their goal was to create a settlement on the new land.

The ending seems a bit abrupt, I was eager to read more!
By the way, I think America is turning 250 this year.
