～時

日本語の勉強のサークルと日本語の文法を話していました。「A時、B」というフォームを勉強しました。教科書には、「A時、B」の説明の中には、（英語ですみません）”If, at the time the main event B takes place, A is current or is still in the future, use the present tense in A”という点が一つです。練習問題の「日本に（行く・行った）時、旅館に泊まりたいです」と書いてあります。この文の状況には、今「私」はまだ日本に行ったことがなくて、日本に行こうと思っていて、今も日本に着いた後にも旅館に泊まりたいということだと分かりました。だから、「行く」が正しいと思ったが、教科書によると「行った」が正しいと書いてあるから、よく分かりませんでした。

I was discussing Japanese grammar with my Japanese study group. We were studying the "When A, B" form. In the textbook, part of the explanation of "A時、B" was that (sorry for writing in English), "If, at the time the main event B takes place, A is current or is still in the future, use the present tense in A." A practice question was "When I (went to/go to) Japan, I want to stay in a ryokan." I understood the situation in this sentence to be that I have not yet gone to Japan, I am planning to go to Japan, and I want to stay in a ryokan, which (the wanting) would be true both now and after I arrive in Japan. Therefore, I thought "go to" was correct, but according the textbook, "went to" is correct, so I was confused.
